Physical activity reduces risk of chronic disease and mortality

Research shows that physical activity reduces the risk of many adverse health conditions, including major noncommunicable diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer, and increases life expectancy.

Globally, physical inactivity is responsible for 6% of the disease burden associated with coronary heart disease, 7% for type 2 diabetes, 10% for breast cancer, and 10% for colon cancer.

The benefits of physical activity:

  • Increased cardiorespiratory and muscle performance
  • Healthy weight and body composition
  • Improved bone health
  • Increased functional health
  • Improving cognitive performance
